Lean at D&T, by definition

Lean is a management system to maximize customer value by continuously eliminating waste and reducing variability across the entire value stream.

What LEAN IS:

  • A system for increasing throughput and flow

  • A behavioral system

  • A capability-building discipline

  • A way to convert lead-time into competitive advantage

What LEAN IS NOT:

  • A cost-cutting program

  • A layout redesign project

  • A set of tools (5S, Kanban, etc.)

  • A short-term productivity push

The Five Foundational Lean Principles (Still Canonical)

  1. Define Value from the Customer’s Perspective

  2. Map the Value Stream

  3. Create Flow

  4. Establish Pull

  5. Pursue Perfection

The 8 Classical Wastes

  1. Overproduction

  2. Waiting

  3. Transportation

  4. Overprocessing

  5. Inventory

  6. Motion

  7. Defects

  8. Unused Talent
